Last Friday was red letter day for Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) when officials from the Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) graced a special assembly to present Lifetime Bursaries to two Grade 12 learners who excelled in The Aqua ENDURO competition.
The recipients of the bursaries were head girl Sindile Mabaso and deputy head girl Mbali Nomfundo Mnyayiza.
Both are top performers in mathematics and physical science. They represented KwaZulu-Natal at the national competition held in Pretoria and are two of the 25 national recipients who will be fully funded by DWS to pursue a science degree in the field of water management, thereafter employment and to continue with post-graduate studies for the rest of their lives.
The school spared no effort in recognising the outstanding achievement of both learners and dedicated a special assembly to inspire the rest of the school that hard work and dedication opens the doors to opportunity.
Deputy Director Viv Naidoo praised both recipients on their achievement and called on the rest of the learners to emulate the outstanding work of both these learners.
He went on to acknowledge Lasec for supporting and nurturing these learners.
According to principal Mr AN Govender, “it was a long and strenuous journey which brought out the best in our learners” and he thanked Deputy Manager Mr Glen Singh of uThukela Water for his vision of training future leaders in water management and having faith in Lasec.
He also paid tribute to the untiring efforts of Mr S Rajkoomar in supporting and mentoring both learners.
The special assembly was a red carpet affair which included a guard of honour, a performance by the school choir, high energy dance performances and motivational speeches.
To mark this special occasion, each learner received a Cornetto Cone from Ola Ice Cream.
