Utrecht Library hosted the launch of Library Week on June 15.
Aimed at encouraging residents to make full use of library services, the event welcomed learners and teachers from schools in the area.
“The purpose of this initiative… Emphasised that knowledge is power and the best place to gain that knowledge is through the local library,” explained senior librarian, Sizakeke Magubane at the launch.
Library Week is strategically launched on the same week as Youth Day celebrations, so as to highlight the right of residents to have free access to libraries and the knowledge therein.

Magubane was satisfied learners now understood what libraries were for.
“The learners also have a full understanding of the various services offered and the benefits of using the service and facilities.”
Learners were then taken through to the computer section, where cyber cadet, Senzo Mdlalose taught them how to use a computer for education programs and surfing the Internet.
They were then presented with library bags and bookmarks.
The orientation concluded with a reading and poetry competition, and further explanation of what Utrecht Library offered specifically.
