Clean water set to ‘transform’ lives in Gunjana and Mumbe, Umzinyathi area

Residents of Gunjana and Mumbe are celebrating reliable access to clean running water after a major municipal project.

Life will never be the same for residents of Ward 17 in Mumbe and Ward 2 in Gunjana, Msinga, after the uMzinyathi District Municipality provided them with access to clean running water.

The project in Ward 2 included the construction of two water storage tanks, the installation of pipelines to bring water closer to homes, and the installation of communal standpipes, eliminating the need for residents to walk long distances to collect water.

‘Easing hardships for women’

Speaking at the official opening, uMzinyathi District Mayor Councillor T H Mchunu said that, as a woman, she understood the hardship of carrying water on one’s head and was committed to ensuring that rural communities enjoyed the same access to clean water as those living in towns.

“With this project in Gunjana, residents will find a standpipe after every two or three homes. The project cost approximately R25 million and will provide clean drinking water to about 2,000 people,” said Mayor Mchunu.

In Mumbe, the mayor officially commissioned the water supply by pumping water from the source into storage tanks before opening the taps.
