MUST READ: ArcelorMittal worker burned in accident
One of the employees was engulfed by the flames, while his two colleagues were fortunate to have narrowly escaped on the fringes of the fire.
An employee was seriously injured during planned maintenance at ArcelorMittal’s Newcastle Works last week.
The incident occurred last Wednesday (September 6).
According to the Manager of Environment, Comms and CSI, Sipho Mntambo, three employees were tasked with repairs of the reheating furnace.
“Due to circumstances currently under investigation, the team [was] overcome by a large flame, suspected to have been caused by a pocket of gas that ignited.”
One of the employees was engulfed by the flames, while his two colleagues were fortunate to have narrowly escaped on the fringes of the fire.
Suffering serious injuries, the employee was rushed to Mediclinic Newcastle for treatment.
After being stabilised in the Emergency Unit, he was airlifted to the Trauma Unit at Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton, where his treatment is said to be progressing well.
“His two colleagues suffered lesser injuries and have returned to work while being treated locally,” Mntambo concluded.
