Man confesses to two murders
"The investigation led to the arrest of Mr Khumalo after we recovered Ms Mnguni's bag and takkies behind his back room at the car wash, where he was staying at the time"

Has a serial killer been on the loose in the Dundee area? The arrest last week of a man in connection with the brutal murder of a woman, whose body was found in a field in central Dundee, has led police to believe that the man may have been behind more murders. Phumlani Khumalo Zondi (37), who is originally from Nquthu, has confessed to last week’s murder and to the murder in March of a woman whose body was found in a field on the corner of Beaconsfield and Argyle Streets.
The security guard at Big Wheel Motors, who stayed across the road at a car wash on McKenzie Street, was arrested by Detective Warrant Officer Nkabini and his team, Captain Mpongose, and Constable Zulu at Craigside on September 18.
“After the body of the woman was found next to Builders Hardware last Saturday, we started the investigation.
The victim was identified as Sihle Dolly Mnguni (30) of Dlamini Village. She was found wearing only her panties and marks on her neck indicated that she may have been strangled before her body was dumped. A post-mortem showed that she had also been raped,” Warrant Officer Nkabini said.
“The investigation led to the arrest of Mr Khumalo after we recovered Ms Mnguni’s bag and takkies behind his back room at the car wash, where he was staying at the time. The suspect was not in his room but the door was open and we were able to see the deceased’s belongings as described,” said Warrant Officer Nkabini.
The information led police to Craigside where Mr Khumalo’s grandmother lives.
Police drove to the area but to avoid the police vehicle being seen, they decided to use a different route via Talana Museum. Detectives Nkabini and Mpongose walked to the grandmother’s house where Mr Zondi was found. The suspect was questioned and was shown the evidence which he did not deny. He claimed that both the women whom he confessed to killing were his girlfriends but ‘did not know their names’.
The woman, whose body was found in the veld off Beaconsfield Street on March 18, was identified as Sizakele Phakathi (40) of Lindelani. It appears as if she was not raped. Mr Zondi will appear in the High Court on October 23. Police believe that more murders may also be solved once Mr Zondi has been sentenced.
