Morester Children’s Home crisis has a silver lining

Due to the influx of community support, the home now faced a more positive future.

Morester Children’s Home no longer faces a bleak future.

In August, the children’s home was notified it would need to vacate its premises by the end of November.

After facing financial difficulties, the news caused a great deal of distress for the management team, as it had already retrenched four staff members in April.

However, due to the influx of community support, the home now faced a more positive future.

“We have a lot of hope as the future looks good for us,” said Christian Social Service social worker manager, Grè Erasmus.

According to Erasmus, the children’s home would no longer be evicted at the end of November.

“We have a few options available, but we will not have to move until we have secured other premises.”

Since establishing that the home will not move this November, it was able to accommodate more children.

“We now have 48 children.”

Children in Morester Children’s Home care came from families who could not afford them, or had been abused and neglected. It was therefore of utmost importance to ensure the children would not face further distressing or discomforting situations.

Erasmus said it was through the benevolence of the community, and organistions such as Rotary and businesses that the home could take in these children.

“We truly appreciate all the support. ABSA recently donated a large sum of money to us, after its charity golf day.”
