Charl Bester tuning in for classical music
Despite embracing music in every facet, Charl Bester's love for the piano never dwindled.
Music is more than a mere hobby for Charl Bester. It is his passion, his love and his life.
As a four-year-old child, Charl was taught to play the piano, and this initiated a life dedicated to music.
“I soon became involved in the school choir, studied classical music, and had opera music training when I was older.”
Despite embracing music in every facet, Charl’s love for the piano never dwindled.
For just over a year, Charl has taught himself to restore, tune and refurbish pianos.
“I am currently studying for a qualification in it, but I have been doing this full time since the beginning of the year.”
Charl began his journey when he realised there was a shortage of people who could restore pianos.
“Currently, I am the only person I know of who works in the Northern KwaZulu-Natal district.”
But what interested him in putting the music back into the keys of a piano?
“I love meeting people, seeing the condition of the piano, teaching the person how to care for it and bringing it back to life.”
While dedicated to pianos, Charl said it was not an easy profession.

“You need to have patience, especially with the older pianos. If you rush with an older piano, there is a chance you could break an irreplaceable part.”
However, despite taking up to a month and a half on a piano, Bester said the end result made the hours of concentration and hard work worth it.
“It is one of those endeavours where you need to have a love for pianos and classical music,” he explained.
