Lions Club take a roaring stand against diabetes

Raising awareness about diabetes, the Lions Club International will host a fun walk and run on Sunday, November 26.

Sugary delights can wreak havoc on a diabetic’s life, as can an uneducated view on the disorder.

Diabetes can be controlled through an organised and health orientated holistic lifestyle change.

Raising awareness about diabetes, the Lions Club International will host a fun walk and run on Sunday, November 26.

The event will start at New Active Gym, where participants can register from 7am for a mere R20. Interested parties can choose between a five kilometre walk/run or a 10km run/walk. Cyclists were also welcome to participate.

Once registered, the event would start at 8am.

The funds raised through the awareness initiative would go towards the Lions Club, furthering its quest for a healthy and informed community.

The Roaring Lions Children Camp will be held next year March, and Lions are raising funds to send children with Type 1 diabetes to the camp,” said Lions Club member, Nicolette Baney.

Baney explained the camp was open to children between the ages of seven and 14 years, and would teach them how to deal with their sugar levels and diet.

“There will be dieticians and doctors at the camp, which will be held at the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve, in Howick.”

What made the camp special, was the Lions Club would cover the costs of the children at the camp.

“We have sent a child previously to the camp, and we would like to ensure more Newcastle children have the opportunity this year.”
