Vryheid’s spirits high despite White River defeat
From the word go, Vryheid played a high intensity game against White River.
VRYHEID left early on Saturday morning for Barberton to face White River, who were last year’s winners of the Mpumalanga League.
With at least 12 of our key players not able to travel for the meeting against White River, we knew the game was not going to be easy.
From the word go, Vryheid played a high intensity game. For the first 10 minutes the Vryheid team camped inside White River’s half, but our opponents still managed to score two quick tries against the run of play from their own try line. Vryheid hit back again with a very good team try that was scored by Mxolisi. With the score 14 – 7, Vryheid’s hopes were still high.

White River scored another two tries before half time, taking the score to 28 – 7. Vryheid felt that they were still in the game and played with great spirit and determination but it was not to be and White River won.
Nevertheless, the Vryheid boys planned some team building activities after the match and great fun was had by all. The team spirit and the atmosphere on the bus back to Vryheid felt like we had won the game and we had achieved what we wanted to.
“With that being said,” writes Head Coach, Andrè Ellis, “I think, as a young team with little experience but with great team spirit, we can go the extra mile this year if the club, as a whole, stands together, everyone gets to practice and commits to the clubs overall cause.”
Man of the Match for the forwards was Stephen Pennells and Man of the Match backline player was Andrè Ellis.
“We would like to thank ‘oom’ Hennie from H&R Civils for helping the club with transport to and from Barberton,” adds Ellis. “We truly appreciate it. We would also like to remind everyone that practice is every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm. Everyone is welcome!”
