Dundee to Dundee – couple plan epic trip

Dundee folk are renowned for being patriotic to the town but for this couple, that patriotism is stretching across two continents and around 14 000 km.
Kevin and Donna Krummeck are marking their 30th wedding anniversary in May by driving from ‘our’ Dundee to Dundee, Scotland. The effervescent couple was in the Courier office this week as they completed plans for their epic journey due to start on May 6.
But why Dundee? Both have special heritage connections with both Dundees. Kevin was born in Dundee, South Africa and even though he left when he was five when his father was transferred with Standard Bank to Johannesburg, he still has a passion for the town.
Donna was born in the Mother Dundee and left for South Africa with her parents when she was just two-and-half years old. Her family settled in Johannesburg and that is where she met Kevin.
Their self-contained Landrover Defender will take them through Africa
“After getting married and having two children, we later decided to get out of the Joburg rat race and settled in Margate in 1996 where we opened a restaurant,” said Kevin. The adventurous couple turned into celebrities when they were in the UK and were interviewed by several Scottish newspapers, including The Courier, in Dundee, Scotland, after which the Northern KZN Courier was named. The Scottish press was also keen to know about their journey through Africa. Their self-contained Landrover Defender will take them through Africa – going through Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Congo and then up the West Coast to Morocco and then finally crossing into Europe through Gibraltar.
Donna says she does not mind ‘roughing it’. “No, we are not worried about safety – we will be sensible and have everything in the Landrover to make sure we will be as comfortable as possible – solar panels, fridge and an ultra-modern tent that opens up on the roof of the vehicle – a bit like the guys on the television programme, Voetspore, use,” said Donna. They will be met by Donna’s parents when they reach Dundee, Scotland, and no doubt the local media.
“We will be leaving Dundee on Sunday, May 6 – so come on give us a send-off.”
“We don’t want to hang around too much so the plan is to put the Landrover in storage and fly back home for the birth of our first grandchild in August and the marriage of our son so it will be a tight squeeze!” said Kevin.
However, once the family duties are done, the Krummecks will fly back to the UK, fetch their trusty Landrover and resume their journey – through Europe, Turkey then onto Africa and finally back home. “We welcome Dundonians to follow us on Facebook – Dundee to Dundee – to follow our journey… we will be leaving Dundee on Sunday, May 6 – so come on give us a send-off.”
