Water leak leaves couple in despair

A team was sent out again and Mr Gass reported that the workmen pumped out the water and informed him that the water was from the stormwater drainage system.

A huge water leak is threatening to severely impact on the foundations of a garage and house on Colley Street. A home on Jones Street, also adjacent to the Colley Street graveyard, is also affected by the leak that apparently started flowing in December.
Mr and Mrs Lyn and Rita Gass, who have lived in their Colley Street home for over 40 years, say the leak comes from the servitude between their property and the graveyard.
“The water continually flows under the precast and into our garden. This has caused dampness in our garage and we are afraid that the water will also cause damage to the foundations of our house,” said Mr Gass.
He added that the homeowner behind his house on Jones Street is facing a similar crisis. Water can be seen continuously running down the gutter on Colley Street.
Mr Gass said he had contacted Umzinyathi District Municipality some weeks ago. “They arrived and pumped out the water. However, the flow soon started again,” he said.

On Monday, Mr Gass informed the Courier that authorities had dug a furrow to direct the water away from the properties but he is concerned that the leak is continuing unabated.

He contacted Endumeni Councillors Xaba and Raubenheimer – the latter whom made an on-site inspection and expressed his concern that the water would damage the infrastructure of the buildings. The leak appears to be from a pipeline that runs in the servitude.

“However, the following the day we noticed that the leak was flowing stronger than ever and down our driveway. Our only hope is that the authorities can fix this problem once and for all otherwise we fear for our home,” Mr Gass concluded.
