Pupils do not report to Dundee Junior Secondary School this morning

A promise to build a new school on land earmarked by the Department in Forestdale have also not materialise

There are again no pupils at Dundee Junior Secondary School on Oldacre Street this morning.  This follows parents protesting outside the school to voice their concern over what they say are the squalid conditions of the school premises.

Teachers who spoke to the Courier on condition of staying anonymous said complaints regarding the shoddy classrooms date back several years.

A promise to build a new school on land earmarked by the Department in Forestdale have  also not materialised.

Parents said the condition of some of the classrooms is such that ‘the roof may collapse on the pupils’. One classroom has been abandoned because of its poor condition and two Grade 9 classes combined with the teacher having to cope with over 60 learners in his class.

Parents spoke of holes in the prefab class walls and even snakes that come into the premises due to the long grass around the school. A parents meeting is planned for 2pm on Sunday to discuss the crisis further.

Attempts to get comment from the Department of Education have so far been unsuccessful.
