Workmen carry out repairs to DJSS amid crisis

However, parents are adamant that their children should not be put in prefabs again as they say the school has had prefabs for many years.

Workers are today carrying out repairs at the much-maligned Dundee Junior Secondary School. Schooling came to a stand still over the past week after parents kept their children out of classes after they said the premises was not safe for children or staff.

The collapsing ceilings, broken toilets, holes in classroom walls and a snake infestation have angered parents. On Monday a child was injured when a pole fell on him.

The Education Department has vowed to build a new school but there are many processes to follow which could see construction work only begin next year. Meantime, the Department says the children will be accommodated in temporary park home classes on vacant land across the road on Oldacre Street.

However, parents are adamant that their children should not be put in prefabs again as they say the school has had prefabs for many years.  They want the Department to house the children in the former Government school in Forestdale which is now used by the Department for offices.

However, the Chief of Director of Education in KZN says this won’t happen as the Department needs the WIFI and fiber optics to operate. Another meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss further solutions to the ongoing crisis.
