Lorna Grobler bids Newcastle farewell after 50 years

After nearly 50 years of living in Newcastle, Lorna Grobler will bid her hometown farewell.

In December 2017, Lorna sadly lost her husband Jannie, whom she fondly remembers as her ‘Koeks,’ and today she leaves behind a lifetime of memories to start another chapter of her life in Pretoria.

“I remember years ago when we moved here from Lyttleton, Centurion, how scared and uncertain we were about what the future would hold, but Newcastle quickly became home to Jannie and I,” Lorna recalled.

The couple raised their three children, Louise, Anton and Rika here and according to Lorna, she would not trade the time they have spent in Newcastle for anything.

“Life was not always easy, but by the grace of God and with a lot of prayer, we raised three beautiful children, made a lot of friends and enjoyed life.”

As the secretary to Gerhard van Beuk of the then ‘Newcastle Landgoed,’ Lorna became well known in town, and after all these years she still treasures the friendships which she fostered through the years.

“Aangesien ek nie by almal kan uitkom om persoonlik totsiens te sê nie, maak ek graag daarvan gebruik om op die manier totsiens te sê. Dankie aan al my en Jannie se vriende vir die jare se vriendskap, liefde en ondersteuning. Unfortunately I will not be able to say a personal goodbye to all our friends. Thank you for all your love, support and friendship throughout the years.”

Lorna will be sorely missed in Newcastle, but said her Pretoria home would always be open to all her loved ones from Newcastle.
