How well do we actually know the history of the town we live in?
The origins of Ladysmith can be traced back to 1846 when the governor of the Cape colony, Harry Smith, surveyed the area around the Klip River.
By 1849, the town (or “well adapted village” as it was described) consisted of only 4 houses.
It was declared a township on June 20, 1850, by Lt Governor Benjamin Pine and four months later, in October, it was officially named Ladysmith after Juana Maria de los Delores de Leon, the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith.
By 1851, the little town was thriving.
