Watch: Member of Parliament on scene at truck drivers’ protest on N3, Van Reenen

Several attempts by the authorities to get the truck drivers to move their vehicles have been unsuccessful

Member of Parliament Alf Lees (Democratic Alliance) is on scene speaking to truck drivers at Van Reenen’s Pass.

South African truck drivers are protesting regarding a wage dispute and are demanding that no foreigners be permitted to drive trucks in South Africa.

Several attempts by the authorities to get the truck drivers to move their vehicles have been unsuccessful.

The roadway has been barricaded for at least seven hours and it is unclear as to when the N3 will be cleared.

Although the situation is calm, no passage of vehicles through the Van Reenen’s Pass section of the N3 Route is possible.

“The DA is particularly concerned about the truck drivers’ strike and the effect it has on the economy. At this time, when about 10 million South Africans are without jobs, we cannot afford for the economy to be hurt anymore. We urge the ministers to resolve the strike without further delay,” said MPL Alf Lees.
