Five fun ways to stay in shape during the school holidays

The key to all these exercises is FUN! Remember, you are still on holiday and you do deserve it, so make sure you are having fun.

During the winter, and especially the winter holidays, we all tend to want to do as little as possible.

It’s okay to let your hair down, put on a baggy sweater and veg out for a few weeks to get some well-deserved rest, but too with much R&R we run the risk of switching to lazy-mode (and staying there) too easily. Here are a few quick and fun tips to stay in shape during the holidays so you won’t suffer too much during the upcoming sport seasons at school.

1. Be creative

Think outside the box and try to put some variation in your workout routine! Just thinking about jogging even puts my stomach in knots, so I can only imagine how the mere thought of going for a run will make you want to rather run for the hills (and maybe even never return). The key is to not focus on working out but rather making it part of your everyday routine! To make it easy, start off small, like doing a few lunges on your way to the fridge, instead of walking, or bouncing up-and-down for a few minutes while watching TV. You might look silly but you will definitely have fun and get some good exercise while doing it.

2. Walk, walk, walk!

It sounds weird but walking is a great way of exercising, so instead of asking your mom or dad to drive you to the mall, how about walking there (if it is close enough of course). Just make sure that you stay on the sidewalk and keep your eye out for potential danger! Here the buddy system might come in handy. So send a group-WhatsApp to all your friends, meet up and go paint your neighbourhood red.

3. Grab your smartphone and start surfing the net for some short, fun exercises

There are so many exercise hacks and 15-minute workout session tutorials available online, so instead of playing online games, how about having some fun with an exercise video and some good music in the background?

4. Get your dance on!

We all dance around in our rooms when no one is watching so why not make an exercise out of it? Put on your favourite music, turn the volume up full blast and let your feet do the rest. For some added exercise, tie some strap weights around your ankles and dance away.

5. Get your game on with some friends!

Try organising a friendly game of touch rugby or switch it up and do something different. Guys, we rarely get the chance to show the girls that we might beat them at Netball so why not give it a try? Girls, have you ever wondered what the boys’ fascination with rugby is? Well borrow your brother’s rugby ball, call up the girls and go get some dirt on your skirt!

The key to all these exercises is FUN! Remember, you are still on holiday and you do deserve it, so make sure you are having fun.
