Fire Brigade praised after containing fire in hotel room

Fortunately no one was injured

Endumeni’s fire brigade was praised for their swift reaction on Tuesday night after a fire broke out in a first-floor room of the Royal Country Inn shortly after 8pm.

Hotel staff said the firemen were quickly on the scene and managed to contain the blaze to room 32.  No one was injured. It is understood that a touring British couple had inadvertently left on the wall heater in the room before going to watch the World Cup Football semi-final in the nearby bar area.

It is thought that a backpack, containing appliances such as a laptop, was left near the heater. This may have caused the backpack to burn and ignite the fire.

The guest sounded the alarm when he returned to the room and he and staff attempted to douse the flames before the firemen arrived.  Police officers were also on the scene.  The couple was accommodated in another room for the night.

Fortunately, their passports and other personal documents were saved but they did lose clothing and appliances.
