Nelson R Mandela: The eternal iconic symbol of humanism, humanity, democracy, reconciliation and freedom from oppression; a singular figure whose statesmanship not only transformed our country, but left an indelible mark on the whole world.
On Thursday, the Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) family joined the international community in celebrating Mandela Day and the centenary celebrations of this august individual.
The programme was simple but powerful and took the form of a special assembly in which teams of learners showcased their talents through poetry recitation, praise singing, impressive narratives, as well as a Mandela Day inaugural lecture delivered by Mr RG Reddy (former principal of Windsor Secondary School, former deputy mayor of Mnambithi Municipality and historian of note).
In his address, Mr Reddy not only took the audience of educators and students on a journey into Madiba’s life, but reflected on the darkness of the apartheid era and unveiled a massive portrait of this iconic statesman.
The Lasec family was both honoured and privileged to join the “free world” by writing its own chapter in the Mandela legacy and joining in the centenary celebrations of this icon.
