Suryaville Primary host successful staff development programme

There are many factors which contribute to this, such as family life, rights-based thinking without responsibility, exposure to violence, pupils' influence on each other, poverty or wealth, conduct of country leaders and developmental difficulties in pupils.

On July 27, Suryaville Primary School and Dean Rundle hosted a staff development programme, to help teachers with positive discipline methods in the classroom.

This workshop was designed to address some of the key challenges faced in the classroom.

One of the elements affecting the health of the school environment, is the issue of managing problematic learner behaviour through the disciplinary processes of a school.

Management, teachers and staff deal with these issues on a daily basis.

“We live in a time where there appears to be a real decline in the area of discipline in general. The result of this decline is seen and felt by teachers and school management who deal with the pupil. Pupils are lacking some basic character elements, such as good work ethic, taking responsibility for their actions, self-control, open disrespect and defiance, to name a few.”

There are many factors which contribute to this, such as family life, rights-based thinking without responsibility, exposure to violence, pupils’ influence on each other, poverty or wealth, conduct of country leaders and developmental difficulties in learners.

For this reason, Rundle said education in South Africa was a key area of focus.

“We spend our time in the schools investing in the lives of learners, educators and parents.”

Rundle listed the following focus areas during the programme:

For teachers:

– Prevention and management of racism and discrimination in South African Schools.

– Positive discipline in the classroom.

– Management and prevention of teacher burnout.

– Copying with aggressive and angry pupils.

– Disorders and barriers to learning

– Non-verbal behavioural analysis in the classroom.

– Sexual offences and child abuse.

– Conflict resolution.

– Prevention and management of peer victimisation.

– Managing emotions and anger.

– Assertiveness.

– Dealing with difficult parents.

For learners:

– Respect.

– Managing emotions and anger.

– Study skills.

– Peer mentoring.

– Basic counselling.

– Peer victimisation and bullying.

– Hidden rage.

– Drug awareness.

– Life skills including puberty and sexuality.

– Child protection.

– Cyber safety and cyber bullying.

– Social and behavioural problems.

– Challenges that a learner deals with daily.

For parents:

– Study skills 101 for parents.

– Challenges of parenting today.

– Cyber safety and hardware management 101.

– Puberty and sexuality 101 for parents.

– Drugs and parenting.

– Cyber bullying.

– Peer victimisation and bullying.

– Parents as role models.
