VIDEO: Five dead and 33 injured in weekend bus crash on the Melmoth Road

Among the dead was a child.

Zululand Cluster communications officer, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said the bus had been travelling from Johannesburg to Empangeni when it crashed on the last of the Ndundulu bends.

Initial reports from emergency services stated that the bus was carrying about 70 passengers, and 60 passengers were injured.

When medics arrived, some of the injured had already been transported from the scene by private individuals.

Among those that were still at the scene, five passengers had died, six passengers were treated for serious injuries, 12 for moderate injuries, and 15 for light injuries.

Both the lane going to Vryheid and the lane going to Durban had to be closed.
