Residents urged to stay alert as fire risk rises

Residents are urged to avoid open fires as extreme veld fire conditions develop.

Residents in AbaQulusi and other parts of western KwaZulu-Natal are being urged to take extra precautions after the South African Weather Service issued an Extreme Veld Fire Danger Warning for tomorrow (July 2).

Extreme fire conditions expected

The warning, which is valid from 06:00 to 4:59, comes as dry, windy conditions are expected across the region. Strong winds of between 50 and 60km/h are forecast over the KZN interior, creating conditions that could cause any fire to spread rapidly.

AbaQulusi is among the municipalities included in the warning, along with Dannhauser, eDumbe, Newcastle, Ulundi, Nquthu and several others in western KwaZulu-Natal.

High risk of rapidly spreading fires

According to the weather service, the Fire Danger Index is expected to exceed 75, indicating an extremely high risk of veld fires. Such conditions can lead to reduced visibility from smoke, damage to property and infrastructure, destruction of vegetation, and the possible loss of human and animal life.

Residents urged to take precautions

Residents are urged not to light fires in open areas or leave fires unattended. Motorists should avoid throwing cigarette butts from vehicle windows, while members of the public are also reminded not to discard glass bottles in the veld, as they can contribute to fires under certain conditions.

Landowners are encouraged to ensure firebreaks are in place where necessary. Any fire should be reported immediately, and people should move to a safe area to allow emergency services to respond.

Authorities are appealing to everyone to remain vigilant throughout the day and work together to protect lives, property and the environment.
