SAPS warn of new MO: “Pay me or I will say you raped me”
During police investigations into certain rape cases, and through the subsequent questioning of the so-called rape victims, Cpt Moothilal said some women admitted to falsely accusing their 'attackers’.
He met her at a tavern in Madadeni; things happened and he thought the sex was consensual.
But now, to avoid being arrested for rape, he has to pay.
He’s submitted to her requests for a new cellphone and paid her R5 000 in cash to keep her from going to the police and laying a false rape claim as she promised she would.

The worst part of all – this is not the first or last case of this nature.
According to Captain Nagesh Moothilal of the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, this is just one in a series of similar cases reported to SAPS in recent weeks.
“It’s believed these women are meeting men at taverns and bars and indulging in sexual relations with them. Thereafter, the women threaten to accuse them of rape unless they are paid,” he explained in an interview recently.
According to the victims of this kind of crime, the women also demand outrageously expensive gifts like jewellery.

“This trend is going to make it difficult to determine what reported rape cases are real and which ones are not, especially in similar scenarios. It is going to be difficult to determine who is lying and who is being truthful.”

Cpt Moothilal said these false reports cost SAPS officials precious time, effort and resources, which could be put to better use on serious cases, and added falsely accusing a person of a crime came with serious jail time.
He urged victims of blackmail to report to SAPS with urgency, to prevent any repercussions of criminal charges being laid.
