Rumours rife that Mayor, Speaker will be replaced

A Council meeting will be held on September 18, Tuesday, where more clarity may unfold.

Speculation is running high that Mayor Richard Mbatha and Speaker Bongiwe Mbatha-Makhathini- may be ‘recalled’ by their party, the IFP.

Both the Mayor and the Speaker were unavailable for comment and the IFP has not given anything official so far to the media.

One source said both have been given 30 days to resign or be fired. It is understood they will be given other posts within the party structures.

However, rumours have been running wild throughout the town that the two could be replaced. Mayor Mbatha took over as Mayor in August 2016.

He has constantly denied claims of corruption saying critics are using that to deflect from ‘his successes’.

He has been charged, along with an Estcourt Councillor and an alleged hitman, on charges of conspiracy to murder the Endumeni Speaker. A charge the trio have vehemently denied.

In July his Mayoral Ford Everest was written off in an accident in which the Mayor was a passenger.

A Council meeting will be held on September 18, Tuesday, where more clarity may unfold.
