Five eloquent lasses from Estcourt High School participated in the South African Literary Association (SALA) Public Speaking Competition.

The requirements for the first round of the competition were to submit a DVD recording of the speeches done by the learners. Three grade 10 learners: Siyamthanda Zondi, Thandolwethu Makhathini and Philile Ngwenya and two grade 12 learners: Nonjaulo Sosiba and Sandiswa Mbele articulated their speeches impeccably.

All entrants received astounding feedback as well as silver merits. Thandolwethu Makhathini and Sandiswa Mbele then advanced to the semi-finals and travelled to Ferrum High in Newcastle on July 28. Both learners gave an excellent account of themselves and anxiously awaited the results of those who excelled into the final.
Sandiswa Mbele was enthralled upon hearing that she would be travelling to Kragbron Primary School in Witbank Mpumalanga, where the final was held. Confidence and poise were the order of the day, on October 20, as Sandiswa competed against the finest in the country, and reigned victorious as she trumped her opponents. She gave a brilliant account of herself, achieving gold and position one.
