Blind musician’s promising career from small-town to radio
His resilience and perseverance against all odds has taken him from a small town musician to an Afro-soul vocalist and guitarist.
For more than two decades, Cebolenkosi Makhaza has been living with blindness, making his way through life in complete darkness.
At just two-years-old, Makhaza lost his sight and life as he knew it turned black.
“Growing up without sight was difficult. I can’t remember anything before that,” recalled Makhaza.
However, out of the darkness, Makhaza’s light of hope and refuge became music.

“Ever since I was a child I always gravitated towards singing and playing on empty drums and tins. Music is a big part of my life.”
Makhaza began singing gospel songs at church and with the encouragement and motivation of his family, he was enrolled at Open Air School in Durban which catered for children with special needs, such as blindness.
While at school, he learned to play the piano, guitar and drums as part of the school’s curriculum.
“I met different people and made amazing friends. They would share their stories with me of how their families ill-treated them because of their disabilities.”
“I was fortunate that my family never ill-treated me and raised me as a normal child, which boosted my self-esteem.”
Makhaza later used these experiences and people as his muse to write his songs and capture the hearts of many listeners.
His resilience and perseverance against all odds has taken him from a small town musician to an Afro-soul vocalist and guitarist. In 2015 he established a name for himself and is now known as ‘Khazozo’.
He has already produced and recorded a single with renowned music producer Mjalefa ‘Mjakes Thebe, who also co-produced artist Zahra’s music.
“My music is written based on the circumstances and challenges in my personal life, as well as those of the people I meet.”
His single gained airplay on radio stations such as uKhozi FM, Newcastle Community Radio and Gagasi FM and he is currently recording an album.
“People seem to love my music and can’t wait for the release of my album,” he says modestly.
The reason behind his soulful music stems from the inspiration to make a difference in listeners lives and for his music to one day play all over the world.
“I want my music to motivate and give hope to others.”
He explains the connection he has with his guitar and how being a vocalist has given him a new lease on life.
“When I’m playing my guitar, nothing else matters – I sing my heart out.”
Makhaza’s message to the youth and people like him is clear: “Don’t let anything be an obstacle to achieving your dreams. Fight for your success.”
