LETTER: ‘Spirit of uBuntu in rural village has inspired me’

I had such a heavy heart reading about the article last week where the village grannies had not even seen a drop of water for so long.

We often take for granted the simple things in life, including having fresh water to drink and electricity in our homes.

Sure, we pay a premium for these services nowadays, and many residents are struggling to afford rates by the municipality, but by and large we should be grateful that we have the means and infrastructure to be able to sustain ourselves.

I had such a heavy heart reading about the article last week where the village grannies had not even seen a drop of water for so long.

So many years after democracy, how are situations like these still acceptable? Why does the older generation have to still suffer with no aid or even acknowledgement of their predicament?

It really broke my heart but also made me more determined to help where I can in this community.

I think South Africans in general still believe in the concept of uBuntu, and I know that raising awareness about this small village will go a long way towards community-driven, positive change.

Stand up, Newcastle, and help your fellow residents!
