Another year has come and gone and once again, bad news dominated the headlines.

From tragic deaths to devastating storms, 2018 had it all.

However, there were some quirky stories which did make our top ten list of most read stories for 2018. You can click on each headline to read the story yourself.

10 – BREAKING NEWS: Final body recovered from river

The desperate search for a police officer, his wife and their friend came to a tragic end when their van was spotted in Landman’s Drift. Their bodies were recovered from the river soon after the van was discovered, bringing to an end a traumatic ordeal for all involved.

9 – What you need to know about the new bridge connecting KZN and Mozambique

Getting away this holidays has been made so much easier thanks to a bridge connecting KZN to Mozambique. The bridge, which is the longest suspension bridge in Africa, will reduce travel time drastically between Maputo to Kosi Bay from 6 hours to just 90 minutes.

8 -Horror bend claims another accident

Three people suffered injuries and a fourth was lucky to escape unscathed after another crash on Victoria Street, near Dundee Secondary School. The area is notorious for being an accident hot spot.

Everyone loves horse racing and it doesn’t come much bigger than the Vodacom Durban July. That’s why when there’s tips on offer for experienced punters or even the casual gambler, everyone is eager to get all the help they can get in picking a winner.

6 – Main chick vs Side Chick

Despite the misleading title, this was actually a column and not a fight video. The columnist in question broached the topic of men who had a woman on the side, while still remaining married and raising a family.

5 – Rumours that green bar-coded ID book will be discontinued are confirmed as ‘not true’

With the launch of the Smart Card ID’s, many  feared that their Green Barcoded ID would expire and so they rushed to Home Affairs around the country to switch over to the new system. Rumours fueled the panic and Home Affairs had to step in and assure people that their old ID books were still legal.

4 – Missing Chilean man confirmed dead

The desperate search for Chilean backpacker,  Slavko Yaksic, came to a tragic end when his body was found in a Ladysmith morgue. Disturbingly, his body had been at the morgue for a week before police realised he was the same person that everyone around the country had been looking for.

3 – Missing police van spotted in Landman’s Drift

After an intensive nine-day search, there was a breakthrough in the search for a policeman, his wife and their friend. The officers van was spotted in the Sandspruit and divers confirmed that at least one body was found in the back seat.

2 – Storm wreaks havoc like not seen before

2018 got off to a terrible and tragic start when a massive storm hit the area on  January 25. Homes were destroyed, trees were uprooted and animals and people were killed. For many, it took months before they could repair some of the damage caused.

1 – Beating Home Affairs queues is still difficult even though you can do applications online

Getting the new Smart Card ID never seemed easier. You could avoid queuing up by applying online thanks to eHomeAffairs. However, despite the claims by Home Affairs, that the process was easier, many residents said they still had to wait in long queues at the offices to have their photos, fingerprints and signature captured.
