Man arrested for unlicensed firearms and ammunition

Police recovered multiple unlicensed firearms after a tip-off.

A 41-year-old man was arrested in the Upper Tugela area after police received information about a person allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm.

The operation followed reports of gunshots in the Moyeni area.

Firearms recovered

Police searched the suspect and his premises, recovering a 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition; a rifle with five rounds of ammunition; and a shotgun that had been abandoned nearby, with one round of ammunition. The suspect was unable to produce valid firearm licences or an explanation as to why he needed the weapons.

Investigation continues

The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in any crimes.

The suspect has since appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court.

SAPS urges public co-operation

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to removing illegal firearms from communities, and encourage residents to continue reporting criminal activity.
