Man’s body pulled out of Vryheid Dam four days after drowning

It is unclear how the young man ended up drowning, but his clothing was found next to the dam and it is suspected that he may have gone in for a swim.

THE LAST Sunday of 2018 brought great tragedy for a Bhekuzulu family after the dead body of a family member, who had gone missing, had to be retrieved from a dam near Transnet in Vryheid East.

According to a report that had been issued at the police station, the 25-year old man was last seen at around noon on Boxing Day at his home in Bhekuzulu Old Location.

Divers from Richards Bay had to be called in to pull the man’s decaying body out of the dam four days later.

“This is such a sad day for us as a family. Every day that he was away from home we had hoped that he would still be found alive. He was such a kind spirited young man,” said his aunt, Thando Ndaba.

AbaQulusi mayor, Jerry Sibiya, and ward councillor, Dudu Mazibuko, were among the community members who arrived early that morning, providing support for the family while they waited for divers to arrive.

“My sincerest condolences to the family, especially to the young man’s parents. I’m certain that they had great expectations with his life. It is very important to know the whereabouts of loved ones at all times. This is one of the few major incidents that we have attended to this season. These dams have taken at least nine lives in the past few years and we would like to appeal to Transnet to do something about them.”
