Newcastle residents question road resurfacing

The poor state of these and other roads have been a talking point for some time now.

How is the municipality prioritising which roads to repair?

This is the question asked by residents, following the resurfacing of Sutherland Street, between the Scott and Kirkland intersections, at the end of January this year.

Repairs to this section of road are certainly most welcome.

However, motorists want to know why Sutherland Street was prioritised ahead of more problematic streets such as Montague Street – the Lacerta Place intersection has been riddled with potholes and sand for months now – and Murchison Street, which is a nightmare to navigate, around the Allen Street intersection.

The poor state of these and other roads have been a talking point for some time now.

Of secondary concern to residents is relative to the dire financial state of the municipality – one resident asked how it was that a contractor was brought in to resurface Sutherland Street, yet delayed infrastructure maintenance is often chalked up to budget constraints.

These concerns were communicated to the municipality.

Head of Communications Dr Dumisani Thabethe explained the decision to resurface Sutherland Street followed assessments of pavement management.

“The maintenance programme was derived to address Sutherland Street and many others as priority in the CBD.”

Adding that the repair work was internally funded, Dr Thabethe said the maintenance programme was presented to the Executive Committee recently and was subsequently approved.

“The municipality will embark on a process to establish a roads and storm water master plan, which will inform prioritisation of roads and storm water maintenance.”
