At just 12 years old, Matthew Gerber from Monument Primary School is a shining star on both the cricket pitch and the tennis court.
At the end of January, Matthew participated in the NKZN tennis trials and was selected for the team to participate in the KZN trials from February 22 to 24.
He also excelled on the cricket pitch during the December holidays, representing the U/12 B KZN Inland team. He was the leading wicket-taker, even taking more wickets than any A team bowler.
Matthew started off the 2019 cricket season with a bang by scoring two centuries; 105 and 115 not out.
He started playing cricket at the tender age of just five years old, and tennis three years later.
“I am passionate about both sports,” he smiles.
Speaking to Matthew, he says, “I’m an all-rounder and also an opening batsman.”
As for the future, Matthew has great plans for his cricket career and aims to play for the Proteas. His favourite cricket player is Protea captain Faf du Plessis.
In the realm of tennis, Matthew’s role model on the court is Roger Federer.
This energetic youngster adds that even with all his sporting activities, he always manages to find time for his academic studies.
Well done, Matthew, you have made Monument proud!
