A fun-filled weekend was planned for the former learners and their families. The reunion began on March 15 with a braai held at the very school that taught us morals and values.

Braai preparations got underway.

We are ever so grateful for what we learned at this wonderful institution. There was an overwhelming response from the group of learners who put the value of meeting school friends after 30 years (for most) as priceless.

Braai preparations got underway.

OverĀ  100 guests were entertained at the braai. Meeting friends after 30 years was an emotional and joyous occasion and the spirit of friendship was felt by all. Getting to know each family was the highlight of the evening.

We all picked up where we left off, some 30 years earlier. The magical night was capped off with an informal dance. On March 16, a yummy brunch was planned. More than 120 individuals joined in on the fun.

A fun tour around Drakensberg Secondary School, 30 years later.

Not forgetting a tour of the school with their children. The spirit of each 89er was felt during the school tour, bringing back the memories. All agreed that what we did in school made us the people we are today.

Emotions ran high at certain points when ā€œsecretsā€ from the past were revealed…and laughter filled the empty passages. The feedback received from our children was positive regarding the caliber of friends we kept.

Much to the delight of all, brunch was served and a lot of catching up was done. Thank you to Drakensberg Secondary School and Mr Sewlal for supporting the 89ers. The main gala event took place that evening at the Estcourt Golf Club.

Former school mates dace the night away.

This was an all adult evening and was attended by 52 89’ers, along with their partners. An emotional tribute was given to the 89er’s that have passed on. The magical night began with a few guest speakers from all corners of the country.

Emotion and joy filled the hall as all 89ers felt the good vibes of the long-awaited meet. The formalities ended with an open mike to the 89ers and all had only positive words regarding the occasion.

A delicious three-course meal was served. Then the fitting opening dance with ā€œThat’s what friends are forā€. The party continued until the early parts of Sunday morning as friends did not want to part ways.

A big thank you goes to the organising committee for making the perfect weekend a possible and allowing for old friendships to rekindle. The nearly nine months of hard work paid off in full. Meeting friends after almost 30 long years is priceless.
