Service delivery remains a thorny issue for residents
Dr Thabethe says the delay in grass cutting was caused by a shortage of machinery and equipment.

The Newcastle Municipality is still struggling to find its feet and adhere to a grass cutting schedule for Newcastle.
In the midst of the rainy season, which began in February, the overgrown grass in many areas has become a thorn in many residents’ sides.
A resident in Lennoxton approached the Newcastle Advertiser as a last resort, after she had logged numerous complaints about this matter with the municipality.
One of the areas, which the resident pointed out, was the veld behind the Lennoxton Library, where the grass has grown to a height where the resident feared it would attract criminal activity , as well as snakes and rodents.
In an official media enquiry, Head of Communications, Doctor Dumisani Thabethe said the area in question was listed as one of the sites of high priority.
“The grass cutting schedule is made available at the Parks Section and it has been distributed to all councillors,” Dr Thabethe confirms.
Dr Thabethe says the delay in grass cutting was caused by a shortage of machinery and equipment.
“The delay has since been addressed as we received the first batch of equipment on February 28.”
Acting Manager of Parks and Recreation Zamakhaya Jele confirmed the new machinery had been delivered.
“We have 55 baskets, 15 mowers and operating tractors,” says Jele.
Dr Thabethe advises residents to call the municipality on 034 328 7714 to register a complaint and to receive a reference number.
“We are currently working on integrating a complaint management system to avoid disintegrated multiple complaint points,” concludes Dr Thabethe.
