74-year-old man fixes huge pothole in Ladysmith

Passing motorists enthusiastically greeted Bedson, realising that he was doing a really good deed that would make life a lot easier for all motorists driving in the area

Stephen Bedson (74), who lives in the Hospital Park area, drew a lot of attention to himself on a sunny Thursday when he took the initiative to patch up a huge pothole in Battery Road.

A woman who was driving past could not help but see this enterprising senior citizen doing much-needed roadwork. Thinking that his proactive endeavours should be recognised, she called the Ladysmith Gazette.

It seems that the pothole has been caused by a leaking water pipe underneath the road surface. According to Bedson, every time municipal workers come to fix the pipe when it leaks, they don’t patch the road again.

“This pothole has been here for years now and when the municipality comes to dig and do repairs, they never patch the road. I live in Watson Road, which is nearby, so I thought: If no one else is going to fix this problem, why shouldn’t I? It’s in the neighbourhood, I have time on my hands, and I do not like seeing people having to duck and dive around the pothole. So it’s for the best that I do the little I can to improve the situation,” said Bedson.

He used his own tools and materials (sand and cement) to take care of the pothole.

Passing motorists enthusiastically greeted Bedson, realising that he was doing a really good deed that would make life a lot easier for all motorists driving in the area.
