Estcourt’s Al-Imdaad Foundation assists after Mozambique’s Cyclone Idai

‘We cannot save every life in the crisis but the mere fact that we saved one life, means so much and is so fulfilling’

Al-Imdaad Foundation Trustee Qari Ziyaad Patel recently returned from the ground in Beira, Mozambique, a city, which faced incredible devastation from Cyclone Idai. Qari Ziyaad was heading a team conducting emergency aid distributions around the city of Beira and in other areas cut off by floodwaters.

Relief activities also took place in badly affected areas of neighbouring Malawi.

As a result of Cyclone Idai, more than 468 people had been confirmed dead by March 26, according to the Mozambican government. The cyclone also took a severe toll on educational and health infrastructure and destroyed more than 90 000 homes.

Al-Imdaad Foundation teams arrived in Beira on March 22.
They initiated an aid operation with support from Mozambican volunteers and together addressed emergency needs faced by victims in the area.

Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Qari Ziyaad Patel and local volunteers offload emergency aid hampers from a boat to distribute to communities in the cut-off town of Buzi during a recent Cyclone Idai relief mission.

They set up a logistics centre at a school building that had escaped the path of the cyclone in Beira City.
Qari Ziyaad Patel said that the first distributions were for a community in the badly affected Tika area in Mozambique’s Sofala District on March 23.

Concurrent relief activities also took place on Saturday, for hundreds of families from the Mulanje District of Malawi, near the border with Mozambique.

In Mozambique, the team continued their efforts on Sunday, with distributions in the badly affected town of Buzi.
The team was only able to get to Buzi with the help of small boats which they used to transport the aid over floodwaters. The distributions in Buzi went on well after sunset, with the team only returning to their base in Beira city, in the late evening.
