Two arrested after farm attack on elderly couple

The men were armed with a pistol and firearm

A swift response from farmers and the SAPS saw the arrest of two men who last night attacked an elderly couple on their farm in the Elandskraal area.

Herman de Wet, of the Dundee and District Farmers Union, whose farm borders that of Martinie and Maritha Theunissen’s farm, Glenwood, said the couple, noticed at around 6.30pm that their dog was restless.

“The dog kept walking around, wanting to go outside although he had just been outside. Mrs Theunissen then opened the front door and at that moment two men burst in. One was carrying a pistol (both men’s faces were uncovered) and he said ‘I am going to kill you’. He pointed the firearm at Mrs Theunissen. At that moment, Mr Theunissen rushed in to confront the man and that’s when he fired a shot.”

The shot hit Mrs Theunissen in the hand – between her thumb and pointing finger. The second man then sprayed pepper spray at Mr Theunissen who, although he was wearing glasses, was temporarily blinded. The men then fled without taking anything.

Farmers were alerted as were the SAPS. “We had great co-operation right from the Cluster Commander, Brig Buthelezi, to the Helpmekaar and Nquthu SAPS. We followed up information and arrested two men.”

Mrs Theunissen was treated in hospital for the bullet wound in her hand.  Mr de Wet thanked the SAPS and the farmers for their response.
