Illegal dumping a growing problem in Vryheid

The level of illegal dumping in Vryheid seems to be growing by the day.

Despite the municipality’s threats of a R2 000 fine for any dumping offenders, fresh mounds of rubbish
seem to be sprouting daily.

Ward 8 Councillor, Magda Viktor shone some light on this issue recently in a Facebook post, where she asked locals to help locate all the illegal dumpsites which continue to show
up around town.

“I was absolutely shocked at the very poor response I got when I posed that question. There was only one response,” said Cllr Viktor.

Fortunately for her, the single response may have been all she needed to steer the project in the right direction.
The response was from Willem Richter, who with his son Jadon, offered the services of their drone as a means to speed up the process of identifying illegal dumping areas in the Vryheid area.

At present, research shows there are 10 dumping areas which could be officially classified as mini
dumpsites, and the amount of rubbish in these areas is just less than the official AbaQulusi landfill
site.
The largest contributor to illegal dumping in Vryheid appears to be garden waste.
