AbaQulusi Municipality apologises for dumpsite ‘smog’

AbaQulusi Municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Mncedisi Maphisa has extended an apology to Vryheid, on behalf of the municipality, for the thick blanket of smog blanketing the town since the beginning of the week.

“This is a big problem,” he stated emphatically. “We are aware the dumpsite is burning and this is the cause of the terrible cloud which has enveloped the town. We have undertaken to handle the situation as a matter of urgency, and are currently dealing with it to the best of our ability.”

The cause of the problem is unknown at this point. Cllr Maphisa said a full investigation into what started the fire, which resulted in the lingering smoke cloud, has since been launched.

“At this point, we are still unsure of the exact cause. However, we will be launching a full investigation, as we cannot allow our residents to endure such terrible conditions. We are very sorry for the current situation.

Cllr Maphisa concluded with his assurances the matter would be ‘contained and rectified as soon as possible. He asked residents bear with the municipality, and accept its apology for the situation.
