Dr Joseph Shabalala to be honoured in theatre production

The new theatre show ‘Mshengu the Musical’ was written by award-winning journalist Sandile Ngidi and directed by Desmond Dube

Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Dr Joseph Shabalala (77) will soon be honoured with a theatre show called ‘Mshengu the Musical’. Shabalala, who was born and bred in Ladysmith, is a veteran in the music industry and is associated with the well-known form of traditional music called Isicathamiya.

The new theatre production was written by Sandile Ngidi, who is an award-winning journalist, and directed by Desmond Dube, who is a well-known South African actor, mime artist and entertainer.

Ngidi and Dube say they are both incredibly honoured to be part of this production that is sure to be a huge success. They say it is a privilege to tell the story of one of their own, namely the great Dr Joseph Shabalala.

‘Mshengu the Musical’ is said to portray the life story of Dr Joseph Shabalala, showing where this great veteran started from and how he got to where he is today, having reached great heights in the music industry. The show is about two hours long and is an opportunity to get up close and personal with a true legend from Ladysmith!
