Dannhauser residents hunt down man suspected of raping woman (85)
Sgt Nyembe confirmed the Newcastle FCS Unit is investigating the matter and court proceedings should begin soon.
Furious members of the Dannhauser community hunted down a man suspected of attacking and raping an 85-year-old in her home, early on Saturday morning.
Spokesman for Dannhauser SAPS, Sergeant Mfanafuthi Nyembe, said the suspect had reportedly broken a window to gain access to the woman’s home.
“He approached the old lady and forcefully removed her clothes. She is suffering from asthma and his attack brought on an [asthma] attack. Even after she fainted, the man still raped her.”
The rapist then fled the scene. By the following morning, the woman came to and approached her neighbours for help. While SAPS was contacted, angry residents launched a manhunt of their own and chased down the 43-year-old suspect.
Their intervention allowed SAPS officials to make the arrest. Sgt Nyembe confirmed the Newcastle FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences) Unit is investigating. The suspect is expected to appear in the Dannhauser Magistrate’s Court soon.
