Protest action closes R33 at Tugela Ferry

Burning tyres and other obstacles have been placed in the road and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

Renewed protest action has resulted in the closure of the R33 at Tugela Ferry this morning.

SAPS officials said the protest, which includes blocking the route using burning tyres and rocks, started in the early hours of the morning. Local emergency WhatsApp groups have sent out alerts, warning motorists travelling to Greytown to avoid the route.

It is not yet clear what the protest involves but some months ago, similar action in the area was sparked as a result of communities having no access to water. SAPA said the Elandslaagte route, which was closed yesterday due to protest action, is open today.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
