In honour of Mandela’s call for 67 minutes of community service, Uelzen Primary School learners collected items to make up sweet- and toiletry bags.
The Grade 4 class delivered them to the Sbongokuhle Creche and enjoyed interacting with the children recently, while the Grade 7 class delivered the balance of the gifts to Siyakhula Creche in Wasbank, then went on to drop off bags of recycled waste products at Carol Bradley’s depot. They also got to visit recycling plants in the Avon Industrial area, a scrapyard and the Glencoe Landfill.
“We saw the harsh reality of what happens when household waste is not sorted. We would like to encourage the Endumeni community to purchase clear large bags and get into the good habit of collecting throwaway cardboard, paper, plastic, polystyrene, glass and tins in this a bag, which will then be taken by community members on municipal collection days for recycling,” said Uelzen Principal, Ms Bruyns. “In this way, they can earn a food ration. Let us help each other and make the world a better place for all.”
