Unisa Law Clinic brings divorce advice to Newcastle community

Students share legal guidance on divorce and family law

The Unisa Law Clinic’s Street Law Programme took place last Monday at Newcastle Country Club.

According to Akshay Jhilmeet, through this programme, the Unisa Law Clinic aims to bring legal education directly into communities across South Africa, empowering individuals with practical knowledge about their rights and the law.

The engagement, according to him, focused on the important topic of divorce, providing legal education on the divorce process, the rights and responsibilities of spouses, and some of the legal considerations that may arise when a marriage comes to an end.

“The outreach also provided Unisa students with an opportunity to apply their legal knowledge in a practical community setting, while contributing to greater legal awareness and access to justice,” said representatives of the law clinic.

Through the Street Law Programme, the Unisa Law Clinic remains committed to bridging the gap between legal education and the communities it serves.

Students explain key legal aspects of divorce

Several Unisa law students spoke on different topics, including protection and harassment orders, being married in or out of community of property, African customary marriages, legal grounds for divorce, the patrimonial consequences of divorce, maintenance, and the protection of a child’s best interests under the law during divorce proceedings.

Guest speakers Morris Gajoo of NOFTA and Charmaine Walker of DBM Attorneys were also present on the day, providing valuable insight into divorce and family law matters before the event came to a close.

Jhilmeet thanks everyone who took the time to attend and contribute towards the event.
