Fire sweeps through abandoned caravan park

The buildings fell into ruin some years ago, after which vagrants reportedly made the area home.

Fanned by warm winds and fuelled by dry grass, a fire swept through the abandoned municipal caravan park and swimming pool premises on Union Street late yesterday.

The billowing smoke made for hazardous driving conditions in the immediate area. It is not yet clear how the blaze started, but the old pool area is known to be home to several vagrants, after the buildings fell into ruin some years ago.

This morning, tree stumps were still smouldering and a new fire broke out across the road on vacant ground on Excelsior Lane. The grass verge of the adjacent Oval was also reduced to ash in the fire, which was only later contained.
