Fire guts hut at old caravan park

"It would be wonderful if private business could partner with the municipality to perhaps look at establishing a recreational centre..."

A fire has gutted an abandoned hut at the old caravan park premises on Excelsior Lane.

The flames, fanned by strong winds, consumed the structure’s thatched roof. A nearby tree also caught fire. It is not clear as to what started the blaze, although a smouldering fire has burned at the caravan park and adjacent municipal swimming pool area since Thursday.

See footage of the fire’s devastation below:

At the time of publication, no firefighters had yet arrived at the scene of the fire. Naresh Gopie, chairman of Tourism Dundee, witnessed the fire and said it was ‘sad that the valuable piece of property has been abandoned’.

“I understand vagrants have moved into the old buildings over the years. It would be wonderful if private business could partner with the municipality to perhaps look at establishing a recreational centre on this central property that would  serve the entire district,” he said.
