Tear gas, rubber bullets fired as Dannhauser protests turn violent

At least one man has been hit in the face by a rubber bullet

Tear gas and rubber bullets have been fired as protesters converged on the Dannhauser Municipal offices this morning.

The large group of residents, who gathered in the town this morning, were to have handed over a memorandum to a representative from CoGTA (Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs), highlighting issues such as ‘the state of the town, service delivery etc.

A man who was hit in the face by a rubber bullet is assisted by fellow protesters.

However, the gates to the municipal offices had been locked and there were no visible signs of management. Angry protesters started throwing rocks at the building and members of the Public Order Policing Unit, POP, responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets. At least one protester was hit in the face by a rubber bullet and had to be treated.

No shops opened in this town this morning.

It is not clear if any CoGTA representative is on the scene to speak to the protesters.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as and when these become available.

The gates to the municipal offices remain locked.
