Dundonians recall when Prince Harry made his whirl-wind visit
Prince Harry was just 13 when he and his father visited the Battlefields
Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have just concluded their trip to South Africa, along with son, Archie.
Many Dundonians remember Prince Harry arriving at Dundee Airfield as a 13-year-old along with his father, Prince Charles, in November 1997.
The Royal delegation had taken time out to visit Prince Charles’ good friend, the late David Rattray, at Fugitive’s Drift Lodge near Rorke’s Drift.
Only three months before, the world had mourned the shock passing of Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris.
A group of about 60 Dundonians was at the airfield to greet the Royals that Sunday morning. A low-key security detail was in attendance and then municipal official, John Mulhatton, was on hand to greet the delegation.
“The first thing Prince Charles said was ‘sorry for the aircraft flying so low on a Sunday morning – I hope we did not disturb any church services’. What a gentleman,” said Mr Mulhatton.
David Rattray and his staff from Fugitive’s Drift whisked Prince Charles and Prince Harry away in their four-by-fours to Fugitives’ Drift where they were taken around Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift battlefields.
