There were fitting tributes to retiring Sarel Cilliers High School Principal, Kevin van Staden at the school’s academic prize-giving ceremony last Thursday. Mr van Staden is laying down the chalk after almost 40 years of teaching.
He arrived at Sarel Cilliers in 1990 after a spell at Ladysmith High School and was later appointed the Deputy Principal. Mr van Staden assumed the position of Principal in 2015. Known as a hands-on Principal, who often took to cutting the school fields himself over the holidays, Mr van Staden will be sorely missed.
He thanked the staff, the Department of Education and the School Governing Body for the support. Mr van Staden said his best farewell present would be an increase in the matric pass rate, from 94,3 percent in 2018.

He reached the third round and beat almost 112 360 participants from 1 308 schools.Not a day of school missed from Grade 8 to Grade 12 – this remarkable achievement is notched by Nokubonga Makhathini and Bandile Khanyi, who receive special certificates from Ingrid van Staden, the wife of retiring Principal, Kevin van Staden.Andre Niemann receives a gold award from Ingrid van Staden, for placing first in KwaZulu-Natal during the Junior South African Afrikaans Olympiad.Revashan Kali of Grade 10 and Mirian Khan of Grade 11 are outstanding achievers, taking home all the possible subject awards possible in their categories – eight and seven trophies respectively.
