The Pongola River is central to a murder investigation.
On Tuesday morning (November 12) SAPS divers from the Durban Search and Rescue and K9SAR Units from Umhlali and Newcastle, were called out to the river in Lüneburg, Paulpietersburg, in a shocking twist to the missing person case involving Sabelo Ngcobo.
The 29-year-old was allegedly murdered on the night of November 10.
Zululand Cluster Spokesperson, Captain Nkocy Gwala told the Herald a man was arrested and led SAPS to where he allegedly buried Sabelo’s body on the river bank, approximately 200 meters from the nearest road.
Due to the heavy rain in the area however, the body was swept away by the torrent.
Two dogs from the K9 unit followed the trail and drew the attention of the divers, to where the body was buried in silt and subsequently recovered by the police divers.
The Search and Rescue Unit handed the body over to Paulpietersburg SAPS.
A case of murder has been opened and the accused appeared in the Paulpietersburg Magistrate’s Court on last Friday.
